SYNOPSIS

Soul Paint is a multi-award winning virtual reality experience by Sarah Ticho & Niki Smit, backed by behavioural scientists and researchers. Narrated by Rosario Dawson, this experience asks you the question: ‘Where are you feeling?’

By combining 3D drawing, playful embodied interaction and personal introspection, you create an expressive virtual reality artwork about your own emotions and embodied sensations. You are invited to reveal your own unique inner reality and then observe the creations of others.

This experience encourages new forms of embodied insight, allowing us to reflect on the diversity of human experience on an individual and global level.

  • Soul Paint is epic and intimate in its scope and potential. This finely-tuned experience gives XR new possibilities for its application across disciplines and research that explores and interrogates the human experience. This piece encourages us to engage in creative play while also inspiring us to actively discover and share our innermost feelings without judgment.

  • I found Soul Paint to be extremely moving on a personal level. My mother-in-law recently died, and I had held onto that memory of losing her. In the Soulpaint experience, there is a moment where you step inside yourself and embody your feelings, soak them up, and then shake your arms and legs to shake them off. Seeing all of that grief that I had been holding on to for the last few months and then seeing it fall off my body and fall to the floor was a powerful metaphor for healing for me. For anyone who has lost a loved one, I'd highly recommend they go do Soul Paint. I had tears streaming down my face afterward. I didn't realize what I had been holding onto and how those feelings did not serve me.

    Sarah Hill, CEO Healium

  • I am honored to have been a part of such an important and innovative work of art and wellness. Soul Paint is an incredibly moving project that invites you to examine the core of the human experience and gives you permission to acknowledge and accept those feelings. Sarah, Niki, Liz, and the entire team behind Soul Paint have been a joy to collaborate with. I’m excited to see how this work will help and inspire others.

Rosario Dawson, “Actrivist”, Designer and Producer

  • An infinite pool of black goo pulling you down, and the tenacity to shake it off - Soul Paint gave me a new way to think about emotions and process my feelings. A triumph of the human soul.

Cameron Kostopoulos, Immersive Director | Founder & CEO | Winner of PGA, BAFTA, SXSW & Games for Change

  • Didn’t realize how much I needed this, thank you. Amazing project.

  • ...an immersive journey, led by Dawson, in which emotions and bodily sensations can be conveyed by making them visible in a virtual space.

    Damiano D’Agostino, The Hollywood Reporter

  • Soul Paint is a really masterful experience that is exploring how to use immersive technologies to become much more connected to your own inner state of emotions, and be able to create a context to be able to share that with other people, and to be able to tell your story of what's happening in your life. It is really quite a powerful experience and actually one of my favourite ones that I saw this year at SXSW, just because it's really digging into some of the real affordances of embodiment and how you can use virtual reality technologies to look inward of what's happening inside your body.

    Kent Bye, Voices of VR

  • By engaging the audience interactively, the piece brings viewers closer to VR interactions. Through gradual guidance and brush techniques, it reflects one's state and image, making it a work where the soul and self cannot hide.
